When we were planning out where to celebrate 25 years of
marriage, there was only one answer: Paris. This was our fifth trip to Paris
and I never tire of it. While there are so many places in the world we have yet
to visit, we wanted this to be a relaxing trip, rather than going someplace new
and running from tourist spot to tourist spot. We love Paris and it is such a
beautiful, romantic place, that it was the perfect choice for our anniversary!
We booked an Airbnb that had awesome pictures and seemed to
have a pretty great view of the Eiffel Tower, and we were really looking
forward to staying there.
We basically had two goals for this leg of the trip – to
relax and to eat a lot of pains au chocolat – and I'm pleased to report we were
successful on both counts!
We arrived in Paris on the Eurostar train on Friday,
December 27 in the afternoon, and it was immediately apparent that the transit
strike was in full swing because the traffic was insane and we had some
difficulty getting an uber at the train station.
We finally arrived at our Airbnb around 4:30 and were
greeted not by the host, but by someone she sent in her place because she was
traveling. While we didn't mind that in and of itself, the lady who met us not
only did not speak English, but did not seem to really understand the security
procedures to get in and out of the building! It was frustrating to say the
least!
The Airbnb was the penthouse of the building with a balcony
on either end, and it had THE MOST FABULOUS VIEW of the Eiffel Tower to could
have ever hoped for! That view was worth every cent we paid for the five nights
we spent there. As you'll see, most of the photos I've included in this post
are of the Eiffel Tower, and believe me when I say that my camera roll is
filled with several hundred more!
The apartment itself was very bizarre. The fridge was on the
non-Eiffel-Tower-view balcony. On.The.Balcony. We had to go outside to access the
fridge! The small kitchen was behind one of the colored walls, which was on a
wheel and rolled outward into the room to allow access to the sink, microwave,
and dishwasher. The blue tub picture you see below is the only tub/shower in
the whole place and it was in front of the huge window with no curtains. That
might not seem like a huge deal, but both walls of the balcony were mirrored,
so people on the Eiffel Tower could definitely see into the apartment if they
were using any type of binoculars or telescope!
What a strange place!
Thankfully, all of the eccentricities were forgotten every time we looked out at the Eiffel Tower and
there were plenty of cafes and patisseries nearby! We had a wonderful time
wandering around the city and sitting on the balcony admiring that beautiful
view! We ended 2019 and our anniversary eating macarons and drinking champagne
and I can't think of a better way to usher in a new year!
Happy Tails to you!
