Summer Adventure 2025: The Wrap Up

I decided to compile some stats about our summer trip! I've done this for a few of our other trip as well and it's always fun to be able to look back on these details!

For those interested, previous posts like this can be found here:

Here are the Summer 2025 numbers!

  • number of countries: 7 (USA, Canada, Germany, Kenya, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Austria...and I could say the number is 8 because we went to the Kenya-Tanzania border, but I'm not counting it because we didn't really visit Tanzania!)

  • number of continents: 4 (North America, Europe, Africa, Asia)

  • number of commercial flights: 5

  • number of commercial airlines: 3 (Air Canada, Lufthansa, Emirates)

  • number of charter flights: 4

  • number of commercial hotel nights: 15

  • number of commercial hotel chains: 7 (Hilton Garden Inn, Best Western, J.W.Marriott, Four Points by Sheraton, Conrad, Anantara, Novotel)

  • number of safari property nights: 7

  • number of nights on red-eye flights: 2 (Toronto-Frankfurt, Nairobi-Dubai)

  • furthest distance from Avalanche: 6,900 miles

  • total commercial flying distance: approximately 16,500 miles (plus about 500 miles between the four safari properties)

  • total walking distance: approximately 249,000 steps / 93 miles

and finally...

  • I slept in four different countries on the last four nights of summer break (Hungary, Austria, Canada, America) before returning to work last Monday!

This trip was life-changing and I know when I get to the end of my life, the time we spent in Kenya will go down as one of the best adventures we ever experienced!

We're already well into booking next summer's travel, with three of our four major flights purchased and several hotel properties chosen. When I shared this with a colleague at work who also likes to travel, she was surprised to hear we were buying plane tickets for next summer while we were in Kenya because she hadn't yet decided on where to go! I told her C and I have our travel plans mapped out several years ahead of time (just the travel for school breaks, not weekend trips and such!) and thankfully, she did not think we were insane.

This tweet is hilarious because it is so painfully accurate! As someone who travels quite a bit, I always feel like I need an engineering degree to figure out how to operate hotel showers! I'd also extend this sentiment to hotel light switches; the first five minutes in any hotel room are always spent trying to figure out which switch operates which fixture or lamp! Surely it does not need to be so complicated! LOL!

Happy Tails to you!

2024: A Look Back

It has taken me almost three weeks to write this post because to be honest, I didn't really want to revisit the first part of 2024. It was a very dark time for me as I navigated the loss of my beloved mom and I have a hard time thinking back to that time when it felt like I was barely hanging on by a thread every single day.

There's this idea that you should only look back to see how far you've come, and I decided to adopt this mindset. As a result, I'm proud to say I ended 2024 in a much different place than where I began it. I miss my mom so much and I often wonder if I'll ever experience a joyful moment that isn't tinged with sadness in some way because she isn't here to share it with me. However, over the course of the year, almost imperceptibly, despair slowly stopped being the emotion dominating my life.

Time was certainly a factor, but I really credit travel for lifting my spirits and helping me gain some much needed perspective. It's always fun to recap our travel at the end of each year and we were fortunate to go to some great places in 2024!

We spent 51 nights in a hotel (not including C's trip to the Grand Canyon with my dad and my brother or my trip to NYC with my best friend) and two nights were spent on red-eye flights (LAX-SYD and YYZ-MUC). Not too shabby!

In terms of domestic travel, we took six trips to WDW (January, February, March, April, May, and June), finishing our 11 trips to WDW over the 11 months of the 23-24 school year! We also had one trip to Disneyland in July, a weekend trip to Denver, a stopover in Chicago, and day trips to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and Connecticut. Although Canada is technically international, we always consider it part of our domestic travel because it's home for us, and in 2024, we went to Canada several times!

Internationally, we went to Milan and Venice for spring break; we went to Sydney, MelbourneBrisbane, and Cairnes (with a layover in Tokyo) over the summer; and then ended the year with a winter break trip to Munich and Vienna.

The biggest family event of the year was the birth of our nephew in October! He is so tiny and perfect and we're incredibly lucky to now have a niece and two nephews to love!

The least fun event of the year was Avalanche getting skunked in February! The stench lingered for months! So gross!

My favorite travel experience of the year was seeing the Little Penguins on Phillip Island in Australia! Truly one of my favorite travel days ever!

Avalanche turned 13 in October and we have been so fortunate that he's had the best people to love and care for him while we travel. He loves his time at his dog hotel, he completely adores his babysitter, and of course, C's mom and dad are amazing and he has the best time when he's at their house for several weeks at a time! We're beyond grateful for them!

I had a tough time narrowing down my very favorite moment of 2024 because there were a lot of great ones to choose from, but the one that filled me with such happiness was going outside with Avalanche at 2:00 am back in February when we had some overnight snow. He and I just ran around the yard together in the middle of the night and it was magical!

We've got some big trips scheduled in 2025 and I'm looking forward to all of the memories we're going to make!

Happy Tails to you!

Europe Trip Wrap Up

I make a point of focusing on the positive aspects of our travel, but obviously it is rare for there to be a trip completely free of hiccups, inconveniences, or annoyances, and this one to Germany, Austria, and Slovakia was no exception.

I've already shared about the train issues getting from Munich to Vienna, and when I referred to said issues as a "misadventure," I was being generous. We were very irritated by the unannounced cancellation and being sent on another train that took us to two random stations where we had to make connections. We were left feeling anxious the entire time about whether or not we would make it to Vienna that night or we'd have to unexpectedly find a hotel in some little town.

After finally arriving at our hotel in Vienna that night, the rude employee at the front desk who told us incorrectly that the date was wrong on our reservation did nothing to improve our mood. It was our experience during the entire duration of the trip that "customer service" means something different in Germany and Austria. Employees in cafes and restaurants, stores, and hotels were, at best, indifferent, and at worst, straight up rude. While there are ding dongs everywhere, we were very surprised by the poor customer service, especially at the hotels, and we are not exactly high maintenance guests! I don't think it's too much too expect a little common courtesy. Is this simply the post-COVID world? Manners and civility have just ceased to exist?

We had shared with the hotel manager a few months back that we would be celebrating our thirtieth wedding anniversary during our visit and on December 31, we returned to our room to flowers and a dessert, which I thought was very kind of them. Imagine my surprise when we were checking out and discovered a charge on our room bill for the flowers! That we DID NOT order! And then the employee gave us a hard time about removing the charge, claiming that she had to speak with her "colleague" about it. She couldn't find any record of us ordering the flowers (because we HADN'T ordered them!) and yet would not take us at our word. To say we were unimpressed with the Andaz in Vienna is an understatement.

On another day, we were walking through the Vienna train station, and a guy made a beeline straight for us, pushing both of us and shoving his way between us. We kept walking, because we don't engage with people like that, and he started yelling at us at the top of his lungs. He came toward us and it was clear he was trying to goad C into a fight. We just both stared right at him while he yelled and I don't know if 1) it dawned on him that he was outnumbered; 2) he was realized that C is pretty intimidating when he needs to be; or 3) he decided he shouldn't start something with us because of my classic RBF, but he eventually backed down and we left. Probably a combination of #1 and #2 but I like to think #3 helped a little. LOL!

When we were returning to Munich from Vienna, there were thankfully no train issues, but we did have an unpleasant encounter with a fellow passenger. The business class seats were in groups of four, in a sort of pod/cubicle set up. When we boarded the train and got to our seats, three of them were empty and a man was sitting in one of them. We stored our luggage and were getting settled, but we had tickets for the two window seats that faced each other and the man was sitting in one of them. No problem at all, as it's an easy error to make and he'd had all four seats to himself from Budapest to Vienna, so we figured maybe he had just decided to sit in the window seat. C very politely, in a very Canadian manner, said, "Excuse me, sir - I believe you are in our seat," and the guy immediately became unnecessarily aggressive and argumentative. This was the last night of our trip and we were so over the terrible attitudes of the people we'd encountered, so I became equally aggressive and pointed to the symbol above the window indicating that my seat was the window seat and he was in it. He just continued to argue! What on earth!?! Just get up and go to your assigned seat! But no, he had to continue arguing until it finally occurred to him that he was in the wrong. He made a big show of moving to his assigned seat and dramatically turned himself to a 45 degree angle to make it clear he was ignoring us. Ummmm...good? You are a rude person and we don't want to interact with you whatsoever! He repeatedly looked at his ticket and I'm sure was hoping to be proven right and returned to the window seat when the conductor came to check the tickets, but we were in the correct seats and he was forced to sit and stew for the four-hour ride to Munich.

After arriving back in Munich, we took the subway from the central train station out to the airport. We stayed at the Hilton there, and it was by far not only the best of the three hotels we stayed at, but also the least expensive. The Sofitel in Munich and the Andaz in Vienna are higher-end brands and one would think they would be better than an airport Hilton, but nope! Just goes to show that the price of a hotel equates to neither the quality of the staff nor the quality of the accommodations!

Our flight home to Toronto was yesterday morning and Air Canada made it clear that we should arrive at the airport four hours prior to our departure time. That was very easy for us, as the walk from the hotel to the terminal literally took less than one minute, so we showed up just before 8:00 am since our flight was scheduled for 11:50 am. Guess what? The Air Canada desk didn't open until 9:00 am! So we, along with all of our fellow rule-following passengers, just stood in line for absolutely no reason for over an hour. Nonsense!

There's quote about traveling that I love: "Traveling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller," (attributed to Ibn Battuta) so even when things don't unfold perfectly on a trip, the experiences we gain from travel are priceless. All of the little absurd and frustrating things are part of the journey! That doesn't mean I love every moment, and there were quite a few moments on this trip that I most decidedly did NOT love, but getting to spend ten days in other countries, seeing and doing things that are different from our regular day-to-day lives, is a privilege I do not take for granted!

My final thoughts on the rudeness we witnessed in Munich and Vienna...I am convinced that France has a public relations problem, because we've taken five trips there over the years, and overall, found people to be generally polite, despite the reputation they have for being rude. Likewise, America has a public relations problem, because it's often said that Americans are loud and boorish when traveling abroad, and we haven't found that to be the case. So who is spreading these rumors?!? Of course exceptions exist, and I am by no means saying every person in France is polite or every American traveler is considerate, but these seemingly widely held beliefs have not been our experience whatsoever.

We were so thrilled to land in Toronto yesterday afternoon and get back to C's parents' house to reunite with Avalanche. It will come as no surprise that he was over-the-moon to see C, but for the first time EVER in the two years we've had him, he jumped up on me out of excitement, too! I know he loves me, but his personality does not usually lend itself to big displays of affection, so his reaction was a complete delight!

We are so grateful to C's mom and dad for spoiling Avalanche while we travel. He loves them and loves being at their house because they live near a park and they have a fenced-in yard, neither of which we have at our house! He has been sleeping soundly in the back seat of the car all day as we try to get home before the anticipated bad weather begins. I'm hoping this means a snow day tomorrow - fingers crossed!

Vienna December 2024

Getting to Vienna was a bit of a misadventure!

We had booked business class seats on a direct train from Munich to Vienna for Monday at 3:30 pm. We got to the train platform at about 3:10 and waited. And waited. And waited. At NO point were any announcements made via a monitor in the station, the P.A. system, the app, or email. Not a single announcement! We weren't the only ones waiting, so we just hung out on the platform until about 3:45 and then we noticed that the train info had simply disappeared from the track sign. We made our way over to the information office to see if we could find out what was happening and had to stand in a long line before getting to speak with a person. When we finally got up to the desk and asked about our train, we were told, "It has been cancelled." Very matter-of-fact. No explanation at all. He printed out two sheets of paper with train numbers and departure times and told us our tickets were still valid and to get on the next train. Well, of course that meant we no longer had business class seats, which meant we didn't have assigned seats, but we just wanted to get to Vienna, so we quickly headed over to the platform and got on when the train arrived. What we discovered once we got settled was that the train was NOT direct and it ended up involving not only one, but two train changes, one of which was a very tight connection that we were worried about missing and one of which had a not insignificant layover of more than half an hour! We ended up getting to Vienna just before 10 pm, which more than two hours after our original arrival time. The train company did end up refunding the cost of one of the tickets for the inconvenience, which is about the only good to come of that stressful event. And let me be clear that we are NOT snooty travelers who must travel in business class. It was more about paying extra for more comfortable seats for a lengthy train ride and those seats being assigned so that we wouldn't have to fight the masses on a crowded train for two seats together!

When we finally got to our hotel to check in, the employee was not particularly kind or polite. At first, she couldn't find our reservation, and then when she did, she told us our check in was the NEXT day. Let me say this...while it is certainly not impossible for an error to occur, C does not make these kinds of mistakes. He pulled up the email and lo and behold, we were correct and the hotel was wrong. Any apology for basically being rude to us and insinuating that we were incorrect about the check in date? Of course not. Side note - I have repeatedly raved about how much easier it is to rent a car in Europe than in America, but the opposite is true for checking into a hotel in Europe. Why is it such a drawn out and laborious process? Check our identification, take our payment, give us the room keys...it is not difficult! And this is not specific to this particular check-in by any means! Every time, we are stymied by how arduous a process it is when we've traveled in Europe!

Despite a rocky start, we enjoyed our time in Vienna, mainly because of the places we visited. I am notorious for not knowing what we'll be doing on any non-Disney trip before we go because C is an amazing travel planner. I often don't even know what hotel we'll be staying at, which some people have a hard time believing because I am very Type A in some aspects of my life! For this trip, however, I knew one place we would be visiting because I'd been dreaming about it for over a decade - the Austrian National Library. It was everything I had hoped it would be and quite possibly the most stunning building I have ever set foot in! I was also hoping to hear a live performance of some works of Mozart while in Austria; we attended a concert where music from The Marriage of Figaro was showcased, and it was absolutely brilliant. We did both of these things on our wedding anniversary, so it was a pretty spectacular day!

Due to it being New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, Vienna was insanely busy and many places closed early or were closed altogether, but we made the most of our time there. The weather was not very cooperative and we didn't see the sun or any blue sky until our last day, but it is a charming city even under gray skies. We did spend one of our days taking a side trip, which I will share in my next post!

We took the train from Vienna back to Munich today and this time, there were no issues with the train showing up! We had our reserved seats in business class and the trip was direct, which made for a much more pleasant experience that getting to Vienna had been! The trip took four hours, followed by a 40-ish minute subway ride from the central station out to the airport, where we are staying tonight before flying back to Toronto tomorrow morning!

Only one more sleep until we see Avalanche!

Happy Tails to you!
