Lovely Lyrics: Love is an Open Door

While Let It Go and Do You Want to Build a Snowman? are wonderful songs, my personal favorite from the Frozen soundtrack is Love is an Open Door, sung by Anna (Kristen Bell) and Hans (Santino Fontana).  It is fun and silly and their voices together are fantastic.

Another reason I love it is because of the “sandwiches” joke.  In an interview with EW back in November, the songwriters explained how it originated from Arrested Development and that “we tried to rewrite it, but we kept it because we couldn’t come up with anything better. Because Arrested Development is amazing.”

I couldn’t agree more!  Best!Show!Ever! (declared in Rapunzel's voice from Tangled)

So it’s a Disney song referencing an Arrested Development joke…how could I not love it?!?

It has become a running joke between C and me and we quote it whenever possible, even in text conversations:

Admit it...pretty adorable!

Clearly the entire soundtrack is awesome (Fixer Upper is another good track), but this song is just so cute and catchy!

Love is an Open Door
from Frozen

Anna:
Okay, can I just, say something crazy?

Hans:
I love crazy!

Anna:
All my life has been a series of doors in my face
And then suddenly I bumped into you

Hans:
I was thinking the same thing!
'Cause like
I've been searching my whole life to find my own place
And maybe it's the party talking or the chocolate fondue

Anna:
But with you

Hans:
But with you

Hans:
I found my place

Anna:
I see your face

Both:
And it's nothing like I've ever known before
Love is an open door
Love is an open door
Love is an open door

Anna:
With you

Hans:
With you

Anna:
With you

Hans:
With you

Both:
Love is an open door

Hans:
I mean it's crazy

Anna:
What?

Hans:
We finish each other's

Anna:
Sandwiches!

Hans:
That's what I was gonna say!

Anna:
I've never met someone

Both:
Who thinks so much like me
Jinx!
Jinx again!
Our mental synchronization
Can have but one explanation

Hans:
You

Anna:
And I

Hans:
Were

Anna:
Just

Both:
Meant to be

Anna:
Say goodbye

Hans:
Say goodbye

Both:
To the pain of the past
We don't have to feel it any more
Love is an open door
Love is an open door
Life can be so much more

Anna:
With you

Hans:
With you

Anna:
With you

Hans:
With you

Both:
Love is an open door

Hans:
Can I say something crazy?
Will you marry me?

Anna:
Can I say something even crazier?
Yes!

Fun Fact:  With his Academy Award for Let It Go, Robert Lopez became only the twelfth person (and youngest!) to win an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).  Amazing!

Lovely Lyrics: Little April Shower

Many people complain when it rains, but this song is a reminder of just how delightful a spring shower can be!

Bambi was released in August of 1942...almost 72 years ago!  Unbelievable!

I love it for many reasons, not the least of which is that it features one of my favorite words EVER:  twitterpated.  Twitterpated!  What a wonderful word!

(For those who don't know, twitterpated means smitten - another fabulous word!)

It is a beautiful film, due largely in part to the work of lead artist Tyrus Wong, who created gorgeous forest scenes that transport the viewer to another place and time.  Mr. Wong is still alive (age 103!) and C and I had the good fortune to take in a wonderful exhibit about him, his life, and his work at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco last summer.

At the mention of Bambi, most people probably think first of characters - Bambi?  Thumper?  Flower?  Adorable!  For me (and likely countless others), Bambi is also known for one of the most traumatizing scenes in a children's film that I can think of.  I believe I was about five when I saw it for the first time, and it was my first lesson in the sad reality that not all people are kind to animals.  I am still not over it and I doubt I ever will be.

So characters, yes; storyline, yes.  But music?  Maybe not so much.  While I certainly love the soundtrack, I doubt it is one of Disney's bestsellers.  However, this particular song is so sweet that I just had to feature its lyrics.  So whether you've never heard it or you count it among your favorite Disney songs, I hope you can smile at its message!

Little April Shower
from Bambi

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune as you fall all around

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare with your beautiful sound?

Beautiful sound, beautiful sound
Drip, drop, drip, drop

Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
Your pretty music will
Brighten the day

Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
You come along with a
Song right away
Come with your beautiful music

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune as you fall all around

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare with your beautiful sound?

Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
You come along, come along with your
Pretty little song

Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
You come along, come along with your
Pretty little song

Gay little roundelay
Gay little roundelay
Song of the rainy day
Song of the rainy day

How I love to hear your patter
Pretty little pitter patter
Helter skelter when you pelter
Troubles always seem to scatter

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune as you fall all around

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare with your beautiful sound?

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune as you fall all around

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare with your beautiful sound?
Beautiful sound

Lovely Lyrics: Let's Go Fly a Kite

Despite the fact that it snowed today, spring is in the air!  This song captures the carefree spirit that I long for during my seemingly endless hours of homework and reading.  :-)

The fact that I love, love, love Mary Poppins is a bonus.  :-)

Let's Go Fly a Kite
from Mary Poppins

With tuppence for paper and strings,
You can have your own set of wings!
With your feet on the ground,
You're a bird in a flight,
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite!

Oh, oh, oh! Let's go fly a kite!
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring!
Up through the atmosphere!
Up where the air is clear!
Oh, let's go fly a kite!

When you send it flyin' up there,
All at once you're lighter than air!
You can dance on the breeze,
Over houses and trees,
With your first holding tight
To the string of your kite!

Oh, oh, oh! Let's go fly a kite!
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring!
Up through the atmosphere!
Up where the air is clear!
Let's go fly a kite!

Lovely Lyrics: Human Again

Today's song choice is courtesy of one of the greatest songwriting teams in Disney history:  Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.  Their work was celebrated with many nominations and awards and I believe their music is absolutely magical.

Howard Ashman passed away in 1991, before the release of Beauty and the Beast, which to this day remains one of my favorite movies of all time.  When the movie was released, it was dedicated to Howard Ashman as follows:

To our friend Howard,
who gave a mermaid her voice
and a beast his soul,
we will be forever grateful.

When Beauty and the Beast became a Broadway musical, some additional numbers were added, including some work of Tim Rice.  One song that was originally written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, Human Again, did not make it into the film, but was included in the musical when it opened on Broadway in 1994.  C and I saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway several times, but it only took one performance for me to fall in love with this song.  The soundtrack from the Broadway musical is one of the "permanent" playlists on my phone, due in large part to Human Again.  It is a great number in the show and its entertaining lyrics always put a smile on my face.  It is sung by all of the enchanted objects who long for the day when the spell on the castle is broken.  The bridge of the song also includes a conversation between the title characters and the emotion that results gives me goosebumps. Every.Single.Time.

Alan Menken has continued to compose incredible music for Disney since collaborating with Howard Ashman on The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.  Most notably, in my opinion, is his work on Tangled...another favorite movie whose lyrics will undoubtedly be featured in future posts because I love its soundtrack, too!

If you are a Disney fan, or just a fan of Beauty and the Beast, and are not familiar with this song, I think you will love it as much as I do.  I believe one of the DVD releases of the movie included a new animated sequence and the inclusion of this song, but I can't say for sure (and I don't really want to see it - I don't like when "originals" are revamped like that, even though I love this song).

Human Again
from Beauty and the Beast on Broadway

Ha ha, oui, my friends, the day we have waited for may be at hand!
Oh, if only that were true, Lumiere...
Aah, human again
Human again
Yes, think what that means

I'll be cooking again, be good-looking again
With a mademoiselle on each arm
When I'm human again, only human again
Poised and polished and gleaming with charm

I'll be courting again, chic and sporting again
Which should cause several husband's alarm
I'll hop down off the shelf and tout de suite be myself
I can't wait to be human again

When we're human again, only human again
When we're knickknacks and what-not's no more
Little push, little shove, they could, whoosh, fall in love
Ah, Cherie, won't it all be top-drawer?

I'll wear lipstick and rouge and I won't be so huge
Why, I'll easily fit through that door
I'll exude savior-faire, I'll wear gowns, I'll have hair
It's my prayer to be human again

When I'm human again, only human again
When the world once more starts making sense
I'll unwind for a change, really? That'd be strange
Can I help it if I'm t-t-tense?

In a shack by the sea, I'll sit back sipping tea
Let my early retirement commence
Far from fools made of wax, I'll get down to brass tacks and relax
When I'm human again

So sweep the dust from the floor
Let's let some light in the room
I can feel, I can tell
Someone might break the spell any day now

Shine up the brass on the door
Alert the dust pail and broom
If it all goes as planned
Our time may be at hand any day now

Open the shutters and let in some air
Put these here and put those over there
Sweep up the years of sadness and tears
And throw them away

"When Guinevere heard that Arthur was slain
She stole away to a convent
And no one could ever make her smile again.
The end."

"What a beautiful story!"

"Oh, I knew you would like it!"

"I would like to ask you for something."

"What's that?"

"A second chance.
"Would you have dinner with me tonight?"

"Dinner? Me? With you?
"Well, that would be, I mean, ooohhhh, YES!"

When we're human again, only human again
When the girl finally sets us all free
Cheeks a-bloomin' again, we're assumin' again
We'll resume our long-lost joie de vivre

We'll be playin' again, holiday' again
And we're prayin' it's ASAP
When we cast off this pall
We'll stand straight, we'll walk tall

When we're all that we were
Thanks to him, thanks to her

Coming closer and closer and closer
and closer and closer and closer and...

We'll be dancing again, we'll be twirling again
We'll be whirling around with such ease
When we're human again, only human again
We'll go waltzing those old one-two-three's

We'll be floating again, we'll be gliding again
Stepping, striding as fine as you please
Like the real human does, I'll be all that I was
On that glorious morn' when we're finally reborn
And we're all of us human again!

Happy Tails to you!
