Life Lately September 2022

The month started off well, with a Disney Cruise, but definitely went downhill from there (although we did take a fun day trip to NYC). My mom spent time in the hospital and has been recuperating ever since; the beginning of the school year is always insanely busy, and this one has been no exception!

Thankfully, C has been able to take my mom to her many appointments and he is the one dealing with all of her medication, including changing her IV every day. I can never fully capture the depth of my appreciation for him, but he has demonstrated yet again what a wonderful human being he is. Without him, I do not know what I would do because I cannot provide the same level of care and attention to my mom while working full-time that he does...and I'm so grateful that he is able to work remotely and has flexibility that does not exist in the teaching world. The peace of mind knowing he is home with her and available in case anything happens is beyond priceless.

Three ridiculous and/or embarrassing moments of the month include: me leaving a new and rather pricey hoodie hanging outside on the Kiss and Ride sign at school, realizing it a few hours later once I was home, and driving back to school in a panic to retrieve it (it was exactly where I'd left it!); me meeting my best friend for dinner and not finding her in the restaurant, only for her to text me to ask if I was in the correct restaurant, which I was not; and me getting something off a shelf in a storage room at school and being smashed in the face by a fairly heavy object falling off of that shelf and kind of having a black eye.

I'm so glad September is over! I did have a cute moment this morning when a third grader and I discovered at Kiss and Ride that we were wearing matching shoes, so that absolutely made my day!

this is what smashed me in the face!

Day Trip to NYC

Last fall, we were looking forward to a weekend trip to NYC, but Ginny got sick and we obviously did not go. Fortunately, we were able to cancel our Lion King tickets and receive a refund; we were also able to cancel our train tickets, but instead of a refund, we were given travel vouchers in the amount we had paid that were good for an entire year. At the time, we figured we would have no trouble using the vouchers, but life kind of got in the way and the months went by and we could never find a weekend that would work. A couple of months ago, we once again looked at our calendars, and had just about resigned ourselves to the fact we'd just lose the money, when we decided to do something a little crazy. I had yesterday off school, so we decided to use the vouchers to book a day trip up to NYC!

We left our house at 4 am on Monday morning, drove into DC, and boarded the train at 5:41 am. The train was pretty great and I was able to sleep for a couple of hours before disembarked at 8:57 am. The day was spent roaming around the city, going to touristy places to take pics; two places we'd planned to take pics were the Brooklyn Bridge and the Charging Bull statue, but there were just too many people around and frankly, we weren't willing to deal with crowds or wait in line just for pictures! It was a beautiful day in terms of weather and we had such a fun time just walking around the city from place to place! It was definitely not a normal sort of adventure for us because we really just quickly went from spot to spot without much of a plan, but since it was neither our first nor will be our last time visiting NYC, we enjoyed it greatly! It's funny how doing something on a bit of a whim just to avoid losing money turned into an awesome day, even if we were super tired on the ride home!

We boarded the return train at 8:02 pm, got off the train in DC at 11:14 pm, and after a short drive home, arrived at our house a few minutes after midnight. About 20 hours from start to finish! When I told a friend last week that we were doing this, I said that I knew it sounded a bit crazy, and their response was that it actually sounded like the exact type of thing C and I would do. LOL!
