Land of the Rising Sun: Day 2

Saturday, April 8

We woke up extremely early, because a 13-hour time difference really takes some getting used to, so we were ready for breakfast at the hotel as soon as the restaurant opened at 6:30 am. The breakfast buffet was fantastic!  Over the years, we have grown pretty impressed with the restaurants at Hilton hotels we've stayed at, and we typically choose to eat breakfast at the hotel each day, especially when we are traveling internationally. Being in Japan, this buffet had some unique offerings, and I decided to try some of the fried rice. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I've ever eaten fried rice for breakfast, and I've got to say that it was the most delicious fried rice I have ever had.  No joke.  I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years and half of my family is Chinese, so believe me when I say that I've eaten my fair share of fried rice!  I am already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow - that's how good this fried rice was!

As for the rest of the day, we spent it exploring Tokyo.  We took the train to the downtown area and played tourist, wandering around, looking in shops, and visiting some neat places.  The highlights were the Meiji Jingu Shrine and the Hachiko statue.  If you do not know the story of Hachiko, you should research it.  More proof that humans just don't deserve dogs. His statue is definitely one of things I was most looking forward to seeing in Tokyo.

I happily admit that I have a love affair with stationery.  Pens, pencils, notebooks...you get the idea.  While I had certainly suspected that I would kind cute stationery in Japan, I had no idea the level of restrain that would be required for me to not buy every single adorable thing I saw today.  And so much of it was Disney!  Things I have never seen in the States!  I had to keep reminding myself about our luggage limitations and that I still had Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea ahead of me.  Seriously so much fabulous stationery!

Speaking of Disney, we went to the Disney Store, and again, there were so many cute things!  It's interesting to see which characters and movies are popular here...two unexpected finds were The Three Caballeros and The Rescuers.  Tons of merchandise for these two movies, which are rarely even mentioned in America!

We went back to the hotel to rest for a while, and then did some more wandering around at night. We found a replica of the Statue of Liberty right near our hotel, and we also wandered past a little shop that had the most surprising window display.  Orange Bird!  If you've read any of my WDW posts, you know I love Orange Bird.  I've loved him since the first time I visited WDW in 1981, and was thrilled when he was brought back a few years ago.  Why this particular window display featured so many Orange Bird figurines, I'll never know, since the shop had nothing to do with Disney as far as I could tell.  But it made my night!  So cute!

We're looking forward to another day of sightseeing tomorrow...who knows what we'll stumble across in our adventures!

Land of the Rising Sun: Day 1

I brought my Tinker Bell tsum tsum for cute photos :-)

I've decided to write a short blog post at the end of each day to capture our spring break adventures in Japan. This will save me from having to scribble notes down to be interpreted when we get home!

We've been wanting to visit Japan for many years - not just to visit Disneyland Tokyo, which is certainly the primary focus for this trip, but also to see Tokyo itself. Based on our research, the Disney parks can get very crowded on the weekends, so we planned to spend the weekdays at Tokyo Disneyland and the two weekends in the city of Tokyo. This trip has been a long time in the making! As I sit here in our hotel in the very early hours of the morning - thank you, jet lag! - I still cannot believe we are actually here!

We left home on Wednesday night at about 9 pm and drove to Staten Island for the night, and then we were up early on Thursday morning to drive to JFK through rain and rush hour traffic.  We had no problems at the airport and were sitting at the gate with plenty of time to spare. We flew on ANA for the first time, and I truly cannot say enough good things about this airline!

We boarded the plane around noon, left the gate, and then sat on the runway for 90 minutes because of a weather delay. With a very long flight ahead of us, that additional time on the plane was not particularly welcomed! However, the flight attendants were wonderful and the plane was a very spacious Boeing 777, with a seat configuration of 2-4-3, meaning we had two very comfortable seats to ourselves. The entertainment onboard was also pretty impressive, so overall, no complaints here!

The flight was pretty uneventful...we watched several movies, were served two meals, and we napped. Admittedly I did not sleep for more than a combined total of two hours, which surprised me because on most flights, I pass right out and sleep for the entire time! While I had been somewhat worried about the length of the flight, the time did seem to pass quickly!

We arrived at about 4:10 pm, went through immigration where we were fingerprinted and photographed, picked up our bags, and finally cleared customs. All of that took about 45 minutes, which was not bad at all!  We bought combo tickets for the Keisei electric train, which took us from Narita Airport into Tokyo, and a taxi, which took us from the train station through the city to our hotel - including a quick stop at the Tokyo Tower, which is stunning.

The best part of the entire taxi ride was that despite the language barrier, the driver made mention of C's Toronto Maple Leafs hat and told us he'd actually been to a Leafs game! Leafs fans unite in a taxi in Tokyo! :-)

After checking in to our hotel and unpacking, we were ready to sleep because other than brief spurts of sleep on the plane, we'd essentially been up for about 24 hours. A long, but exciting, day of travel to finally make it to Asia! I can't wait to see what adventures are in store!

Anxiously waiting to board the plane!

So excited!

Nevertheless, She Persisted

March is Women's History Month, and this is simply a collection of some famous women I personally admire. This particular group of women includes authors, astronauts, musicians, actresses, executives, artists, lawyers, activists, and teachers. Each has inspired me in some way...some have made me laugh until tears roll down my cheeks, some have taken me to other worlds through their art, some have made me ponder life's big questions, and some have helped me dream while I stargaze at night. These are tough, strong, bold, brilliant women.

The final three are the most important women in my life and they mean everything to me. The challenges each has overcome is nothing short of incredible. I owe them everything and it is my life's goal to make these three women proud.

In a way it's kind of pathetic that we have to designate a month to celebrate Women's History; how can the contributions of one-half of the population be limited to recognition during one-twelfth of the year? That math makes no sense!
