30 in 30: Day 11

I'm so excited to be back in Alaska!

The first time we worked our way through the 50 states, Alaska was #49 and Hawaii was #50. This time, Alaska is #32 and Hawaii is #9!

Daily Stats
Our own car: 13 miles
Flight from Seattle to Anchorage: 1,444 miles
Rental car: 15 miles (as of 6:00 pm)
Total Miles Traveled: 1,472 (as of 6:00 pm)
States Visited: WA, AK

We got up super early this morning so we could leave our hotel at 6 am and we made a quick stop at Top Pot for donuts and coffee before driving to the airport. As far as SeaTac goes, I'll say this...we've been to so many airports over the course of our travels and SeaTac is definitely near the bottom of the list. What a mess! Security was a nightmare, signage and staff left so much to be desired, and everything just seemed disorganized and chaotic. When we got to the gate, it was super crowded and then the boarding process was beyond slow. The flight left late as a result, but other than that, it was fine and I pretty much slept through it until the plane had begun its descent.

When we arrived, the hunt began for a welcome sign (see my previous post) as we made our way to the car rental area. I've written before about how ridiculous the car rental process is in the U.S. compared to Europe and this was no exception. Why does a transaction that should take 3-5 minutes end up taking 40 minutes?!? Why do the rental car companies always run out of cars despite customers having reservations to secure the vehicles?!? Who is designing this obnoxiously flawed system?!? C was told they had no cars but they had two available pickup trucks. Um, hard pass. When they finally found us a car, the employee mentioned that there'd be an additional fee if we returned the car with a fish smell in it and C assured the guy we had no plans to go fishing! I have no words for the lunacy of the entire situation.

Once we left the airport in the rental car, things improved; we got lunch and ice cream, and then checked into our hotel. It's felt like we've been going nonstop since we left home on July 2, and today is the first chance we've had to just hang out in our hotel room and take it easy for an entire afternoon. It's been glorious!

We're off to find some dinner now and wander around Anchorage! We've got many hours of daylight left!

tomorrow's sunrise
and
today's sunset

Happy Tails to you!
